Not only did he prove himself as an essayist when writing about Gypsies, Schulz and Wojtkiewicz, but he was also able to compose dream-like stories and recount folk tales he had heard from an old woman. In <strong><em>Wspominki starowarszawskie<\/em><\/strong> <strong>(<\/strong><strong>Memories of Old Warsaw<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> he turned into a reporter to write an account of people who had preserved the spirit of the pre-war city. In <strong><em>Baj\u0119dy z augustowskich las\u00f3w<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Tales from August\u00f3w Forest)<\/strong> he revived folk stories told to him by an old local woman, Jadwiga. With short pieces in <strong><em>Dobrodziejstwo inwentarza<\/em><\/strong><strong> (The Benefit of Inventory)<\/strong> he recalled ancient artefacts salvaged from bygone worlds. A volume entitled <strong><em>Czekanie na sen psa<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Waiting for the Dog to Sleep)<\/strong> became his most notable prose work. Those semi-visionary short stories (as Bogdan Wojdowski called them) \u201csneak across the border dividing poetry from prose.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although Ficowski did not consider himself a prose writer, he was successful as one.
