That same year he made his literary debut with the publication of a poem in the <em>Dzi\u015b i Jutro<\/em> magazine. His first volume of poetry, <strong><em>O\u0142owiani \u017co\u0142nierze<\/em> (Tin Soldiers)<\/strong>, was published in 1948.<\/p>\n<p>From that moment on, until his death in 2006, twenty more volumes of poetry would accompany the successive stages of his life. He would refer to them as his \u201cspiritual autobiography\u201d and the only \u201creligious practice\u201d accessible to him. Later on, in addition to \u201cexistential magic\u201d, his poetry began to lean towards history \u2013 both distant and contemporary. Volumes containing historical motifs, such as <strong><em>Gryps<\/em> (Kite), <em>Errata<\/em><\/strong> <strong>(Erratum)<\/strong> and <strong><em>\u015amier\u0107 jednoro\u017cca<\/em> (Death of a Unicorn)<\/strong>, written in the 1970s, were of special significance to him. And so was <strong><em>Odczytanie popio\u0142\u00f3w<\/em> (A Reading of Ashes)<\/strong>, a collection of poems dealing with the holocaust of Polish Jews.
